Three Card Poker

by Playtech

Three Card Poker is a fast-paced table game played against the dealer rather than other players, using a three-card hand with an optional Pair Plus side bet that pays independently of the main hand's outcome.

Playing a three-card hand against the dealer

Three Card Poker opens with an ante wager, after which you and the dealer each receive three cards. Yours are visible, the dealer's are not. From there the decision is binary: fold and surrender the ante, or place a play bet equal to it and see the dealer's hand. There is no drawing, no swapping and no second betting round to think about.

Hand rankings are compressed because only three cards are in play, so a straight outranks a flush and three of a kind sits at the top. Playtech's release, published in 2010, keeps that ranking chart on screen. The dealer needs at least a queen-high hand to qualify; if the dealer does not qualify, the ante pays and the play bet is returned untouched.

Pair Plus and the ante bonus

The Pair Plus side bet is settled purely on your own three cards and ignores what the dealer holds. A pair or better pays, with stronger hands paying progressively more according to the table shown in the paytable. Because it never touches the dealer comparison, you can lose the ante and play bets while Pair Plus still pays, or win the main hand with nothing on the side.

The ante bonus works the other way around: it rewards a strong hand regardless of whether the dealer beats you. Between the two, most of the volatility in a session comes from the side wager rather than from the main game. The core ante-and-play decision is steady and low-drama; Pair Plus is where the swings live.

What to weigh before you sit down

The main hand is one of the calmer casino table games in terms of session variance, since most rounds resolve as a single-unit win or loss. That makes it a reasonable place to learn table etiquette and hand reading without the pace of blackjack decisions. Bet sizing should assume you will be committing two units, not one, on any hand you choose to play.

Compared with Caribbean Stud or Casino Hold'em, Three Card Poker asks fewer decisions per round and resolves faster. The trade-off is that there is very little strategic depth beyond the fold-or-play threshold. If you treat the side bet as an occasional extra rather than a standing wager, the game behaves much as the base rules suggest.

Three Card Poker — frequently asked questions

Do I play against other people at the table?+

No. Every hand is resolved against the dealer's three cards only, so other players at a live table have no effect on your result. In the Playtech online version you are the only player at the table, and hands are dealt one at a time on your own schedule.

Why does a straight beat a flush here?+

With only three cards dealt, a three-card straight is mathematically harder to make than a three-card flush, so the ranking order is inverted compared with five-card poker. Three of a kind is the strongest hand. The game keeps the ranking chart visible so the order is easy to check mid-session.

Is the Pair Plus bet worth placing every hand?+

It is optional and settled independently of the dealer's hand, which means it adds variance rather than reducing it. Placing it every round raises your total stake per hand and widens your swings in both directions. Many players use it selectively, if at all, rather than treating it as part of the base bet.
